Patrick Bellew, founder of the award-winning environmental design consultancy Atelier Ten, will step back from the firm at the end of the year.
After 34 years leading the business, Bellew will transition to a strategic advisory role at parent company SJ Group in January 2025.
Reflecting on his tenure, Bellew said ‘after 34 years leading Atelier Ten, four of which have been within SJ, it is the right time to hand over the baton so I can take on a strategic advisory role and pursue other interests, including teaching and writing.
I have had the immense privilege of working with incredible people—from colleagues to clients, collaborators, and peers—who have each played a vital role in our ambition for a greener future.’
Since founding Atelier Ten in 1990, Bellew has grown the firm to over 350 staff across 11 global offices, collaborating on iconic projects such as Gardens by the Bay in Singapore and London’s National Theatre. Last month, he was awarded the CIBSE Gold Medal for his contributions to sustainable design.
Duncan Campbell, newly appointed executive director for the UK, praised Bellew’s legacy. ‘Patrick’s pioneering approach to sustainability has been transformative. As we face the climate emergency, our mission is to push further towards a regenerative future,’ he said.
Senior Executive Director Nico Kienzl added ‘Patrick’s leadership has shaped Atelier Ten into a global leader in sustainable design. His influence will remain as we continue advancing his vision internationally.’
In his advisory role, Bellew will guide SJ Group’s sustainability charter while expanding his academic work, including a design studio at Yale University in 2025.
